For fans of Cancer Bats, Slayer, Pantera and Entombed, it says here on the press release for this six track EP. Granted, it also says that Montreal’s Vantablack Warship are a four-piece when there are clearly five of them in the picture, but that is of little consequence if the first statement holds true. And hell, does it ever! Put simply, if you like any or all of those bands then you’re going to love this!
But while Vantablack Warship wear their influences for all to see, there is, thankfully, no doubt that they have a sound that is all their own, or at least a sound made their own. Opening track You’ll Burn brings to mind Entombed’s 1993 classic Wolverine Blues, – as do all six tracks, in fact – but never to the point of plagiarism, and although Cancer Bats, Pantera and Slayer are all obvious influences too, there is no sense that you’re hearing a poor imitation, just a kick ass band with great taste in music.
Entombed’s dirty rumbling groove? Sure. Cancer Bats punk/stoner attitude? Certainly. And the ghosts of Dimebag and Hanneman aren’t too far away either, but Vantablack Warship is nonetheless it’s own thing. Recorded in just eight hours, this is a startling debut.
